What Are Sugars?

Sugars: A Sweet Overview

Sugars are a type of carbohydrate that provides the body with energy. They are found naturally in many foods, such as fruits, vegetables, and milk products. Sugars can also be added to foods during processing, such as in candy, soda, and baked goods.

There are two main types of sugars: simple sugars and complex sugars. Simple sugars are made up of one or two sugar molecules, while complex sugars are made up of three or more sugar molecules.

Simple Sugars

Simple sugars are the most common type of sugar found in foods. They are quickly absorbed by the body and provide a quick burst of energy.

There are three main types of simple sugars:

  • Glucose: Glucose is the body's main source of energy. It is found in all foods that contain carbohydrates.
  • Fructose: Fructose is a natural sugar found in fruits and honey. It is sweeter than glucose and is often used as a sweetener in processed foods.
  • Galactose: Galactose is a sugar that is found in milk products. It is not as sweet as glucose or fructose.

Complex Sugars

Complex sugars are made up of three or more sugar molecules. They are not as quickly absorbed by the body as simple sugars, so they provide a more sustained source of energy.

There are two main types of complex sugars:

  • Starch: Starch is a complex sugar that is found in grains, potatoes, and legumes. It is the body's main source of energy.
  • Fiber: Fiber is a type of complex sugar that is not digested by the body. It helps to keep the digestive system healthy and can help to lower cholesterol levels.

The Role of Sugars in the Body

Sugars play an important role in the body. They provide energy, help to regulate blood sugar levels, and are essential for the growth and development of the brain and nervous system.

However, eating too much sugar can lead to weight gain, tooth decay, and other health problems.

How to Limit Sugar Intake

The American Heart Association recommends that adults limit their added sugar intake to no more than 6 teaspoons per day for women and 9 teaspoons per day for men.

There are many ways to limit sugar intake, such as:

  • Reading food labels and choosing foods that are low in sugar.
  • Limiting the consumption of sugary drinks, such as soda, juice, and sports drinks.
  • Choosing whole fruits and vegetables over processed foods.
  • Making your own snacks and meals instead of buying pre-packaged foods.
