ATP Tokyo: Medvedev Advances, Kyrgios Retires
Medvedev Cruises into Quarterfinals
Daniil Medvedev, the reigning US Open champion, continued his impressive form by defeating Miomir Kecmanovic 6-0, 6-3 in the second round of the ATP Tokyo on Wednesday. Medvedev, who received a first-round bye, dominated the match from start to finish, winning 82% of his first-serve points and breaking Kecmanovic's serve five times.
Medvedev will face Denis Shapovalov in the quarterfinals. Shapovalov, the 18th seed, upset fourth seed Casper Ruud 6-3, 3-6, 6-3 earlier in the day.
Kyrgios Retires with Knee Injury
Nick Kyrgios was forced to retire from his second-round match against Taylor Fritz due to a knee injury. Kyrgios, who won the title in Tokyo in 2016, was trailing 3-6, 6-0, 3-1 when he decided to withdraw from the match.
The injury is a setback for Kyrgios, who has been in good form this season. He won the Citi Open in Washington, D.C., in August and reached the semifinals of the US Open earlier this month.
Other Results
In other second-round matches, second seed Stefanos Tsitsipas defeated Kwon Soon-woo 6-2, 6-3, and third seed Andrey Rublev defeated Alexei Popyrin 6-3, 6-2.
The quarterfinals of the ATP Tokyo will be played on Friday.
