Diamondbacks Designate Luis Guillorme For Assignment

Guillorme's Struggles Continue in 2023

Luis Guillorme, the 28-year-old utility infielder for the Arizona Diamondbacks, has been designated for assignment (DFA) by the team. This move comes after a disappointing start to the 2023 season, in which Guillorme has struggled both offensively and defensively.

Guillorme, who was acquired by the Diamondbacks from the New York Mets in a trade in 2022, has been a valuable asset to the team in the past. He is a versatile player who can play both shortstop and second base, and he has a strong track record as a defender. However, Guillorme has struggled to find his footing in the batter's box this season, hitting just .188 with no home runs and 5 RBIs in 48 at-bats.

Guillorme's defensive play has also been below par this season. He has committed 5 errors in 19 games played, which is a significant increase from his previous error rate. His fielding percentage of .889 is well below his career average of .966.

Diamondbacks' Depth at Second Base

The Diamondbacks' decision to DFA Guillorme is likely due to their depth at second base. Ketel Marte, who is a Gold Glove winner at the position, is entrenched as the team's everyday second baseman. Josh Rojas, who can also play second base, has been a valuable utility player for the Diamondbacks and is hitting .296 this season.

With Marte and Rojas ahead of him on the depth chart, Guillorme was unlikely to receive consistent playing time with the Diamondbacks. The team decided to DFA him in order to clear a roster spot for another player.

Guillorme's Future

It is unclear what the future holds for Guillorme. He is a talented player with a proven track record, but he has struggled in 2023. It is possible that he will be claimed off waivers by another team, but it is also possible that he will be out of Major League Baseball for the time being.
