60s Baltimore Reporter Pursues Missing Girl Case
New Series Debuts on July 19
Lady in the Lake, a private detective mystery film originally released in 1947, is getting a modern adaptation as a television series. The new series, which premieres on TV on July 19, stars Natalie Portman as an aspiring reporter who investigates the disappearance of a young girl in 1960s Baltimore.
The original Lady in the Lake film, directed by Robert Montgomery, starred Montgomery himself alongside Audrey Totter, Leon Ames, and Tom Tully. The film noir is known for its innovative use of the first-person perspective, with the camera taking the point of view of Montgomery's character, private detective Philip Marlowe.
The new television series adapts Lady in the Lake for a contemporary audience, with Portman's character, Maddie Schwartz, facing challenges and prejudices as an aspiring female reporter in the 1960s. Moses Ingram, Ylan Noel, and Brett Gelman co-star in the series, which is produced by Endeavor Content and Bad Robot Productions.
