Buenos Aires, Argentina – Argentina kicked off their Copa America campaign with a convincing 2-0 victory over Canada at the Estadio Monumental Antonio Vespucio Liberti on Thursday night.

Lionel Messi opened the scoring for the reigning champions in the 15th minute with a trademark left-footed finish after a fine run from Angel Di Maria. Lautaro Martinez doubled Argentina's lead just before half-time with a poacher's goal following a scramble in the Canadian penalty area.

Canada, making their first appearance in the Copa America since 2001, showed plenty of spirit and determination but were unable to find a way past Argentina's resolute defense. Alphonso Davies came closest for the visitors with a long-range effort that hit the post in the second half.

The victory gives Argentina a strong start to their Copa America title defense and extends their unbeaten streak to 25 games. they will face Uruguay in their next match on Monday, while Canada will look to bounce back against Ecuador on Sunday.
