Gunmen Kill Six Police Officers in Dagestan
At least a dozen police officers have been wounded in two seemingly coordinated attacks in Dagestan, a republic in Russia's North Caucasus, according to local law enforcement officials quoted by Russian state news agencies. A priest and a policeman were also killed in separate attacks on a synagogue and a church.
The attacks began in Makhachkala, the capital of Dagestan, when gunmen opened fire on a police post, killing six officers. A second attack occurred approximately 125km (78 miles) away in Derbent, where gunmen attacked a synagogue, killing a priest. A policeman was also killed in a separate attack on a church in Derbent.
Derbent is home to an ancient Jewish community and a UNESCO World Heritage site. The attacks have raised concerns about the safety of religious minorities in the region.
