Atlético Madrid Hold Slight Edge Over Dortmund in Champions League Quarter-Final
First Leg Ends 2-1 in Favor of Spanish Giants
Late Goal from Haller Gives Dortmund Hope Ahead of Second Leg
WEB Atletico Madrid secured a narrow 2-1 victory over Borussia Dortmund in the first leg of their UEFA Champions League quarter-final clash on Wednesday.
The Spanish champions took an early lead through a goal from Thomas Lemar in the 17th minute. However, Dortmund leveled the score in the 35th minute with a header from Karim Adeyemi.
Atlético regained the lead just before halftime through a penalty from Antoine Griezmann. The Frenchman was fouled in the box by Dortmund goalkeeper Gregor Kobel, and he made no mistake from the spot.
Dortmund pushed for an equalizer in the second half, but they were frustrated by the Atlético defense. The German side did manage to pull one back in the 84th minute with a goal from Sébastien Haller, but it proved to be too little too late.
The result leaves Atlético with a slender advantage heading into the second leg, which will be played in Dortmund on April 17.
